Watch Out Winter Pests!

Dec 29, 2017

Winter: the season of crackling wood fires, blustery days, and family togetherness. Many homeowners and business owners assume that winter is the one season they don’t have to worry about pests. After all, don’t most pests burrow in the ground or die off over the winter? Surely it’s too cold for them to be active.

This sentiment has a bit of truth to it – just noting the way that homeowners and business owners want it to be true. It is too cold for many pests to be outside and active. They are seeking shelter and warmth.

Unfortunately for you, the place where they try to find it might be in your house or workplace.

Luckily, there are steps you can take to ensure that your home doesn’t become pest central this winter. Here are our tips to help you keep pest control on your radar this season:

  1. Make sure your chimney is properly covered . Rodents, birds, and other animals might try to use your chimney as a warm, sheltered place from winter storms. Keep them out by having a qualified chimney sweep install a chimney cap or other covering.
  2. Caulk and seal any openings in the exterior. Not only will this help you keep your heating bills down and cut down on drafts, it will also make it harder for pests to get into the space.
  3. Stack wood away from the building. Everyone loves a beautiful wood fire! But what people don’t like are insects finding a home in the stacked wood, then sneaking from the wood into the building. Cut down on the odds of this by keeping firewood at least 5 feet away from your foundation.
  4. Don’t assume that summer and fall pests are completely gone. Winters are getting warmer and milder, which means that pests may be active for longer periods. Continue to practice good pest control and don’t slack on the things that keep pests out of your home the other seasons of the year.
  5. Keep an exterminator on speed dial. The last thing you want is to have to cancel a holiday gathering because of a pest problem. Keep your eyes and ears open for any sign of pests, and if you spot them, call an exterminator right away!

Do Your Research When looking for a reputable pest control company , it’s very important to do your research. Pest control should always be done by a professional exterminator who has the years of experience and proper equipment to offer comprehensive and reliable pest control services. We understand that you might be tight on money and want to only choose the cheapest option. But this could lead to problems down the road if that company does not have the skills to do a proper job. That is why cost should not be the only factor that determines the company you pick. You need a professional who comes equipped for the job and knows how and what the best pest solutions and pesticides are to use. Take Your Time and Do Your Homework Discovering that there is a pest problem in your home will surely make you want to eliminate the problem immediately. The longer these pests are allowed to roam free on your property, the more damage they can potentially cause. However, most problems can wait a few days so you have time to select a competent company. This includes asking all of the right questions to get a better feel about them and their skillset. Questions You Should Ask… How many years have you been in business? Would you provide me with a list of references? Will the person(s) performing the services be a certified, licensed pesticide applicator or a licensed technician? Be Aware of Companies That…. Do not have a working telephone number. Say they have a secret formula. (All pesticide products must be registered by the U.S. EPA and the United States Department of Agriculture.) Pressure you to sign a contract and suggest that your house is structurally unsound and may collapse if not treated. Say they have excess material left over from a previous job and offer a reduced price. Thankfully, Killo Exterminating Co Inc is here to help you if you need pest control services. After all, we have over 75 years of experience. Call us today!
